The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) is held every year on 22 May. It was proclaimed in December 2000 by the UN General Assembly. The day commemorates the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1992.

The global theme for 2019 - Our Biodiversity, Our Food, Our Health - aims to leverage knowledge and spread awareness about the dependency of the world’s food systems, nutrition, and health on biodiversity and healthy ecosystems.

Reflecting the variety of life on the planet, IDB aims to: raise awareness and understanding about biological diversity, and issues that surround it; and highlight possible strategies to protect biodiversity.

Today, habitats are degrading and leading to a reduction in biodiversity, a problem that directly affects human well-being, poverty reduction and global sustainable development.
