Montenegro Forest Stands Reviewed as Part of Drin River Basin Project
A joint team from the Administration for Forest and Hunting Management (AFHM) of Montenegro, ProSilva Montenegro, and CNVP carried out a field visit to several forest stands to assess current conditions and evaluate the forest management methods applied on site. The visit was organized to review practices in the field and to compare management approaches across different ownership types.
Experts walked through the stands, presented observations, and discussed the results. The team concluded that state forests are being managed in a sustainable way, following natural processes and the principles of close-to-nature, multifunctional forest management.
In private forests, experts observed a higher intensity of logging. This level of harvesting does not fully align with close-to-nature forestry principles and raises concerns about long-term sustainability.
Special thanks go to Dragana Potpara, Head of the Forest Use and Non-Timber Forest Products Department at AFHM. She preserved presentations and posters from earlier exercises, which allowed the team to make a useful comparison of past and current management approaches.
The visit underlined a clear message: achieving lasting sustainability depends not only on good technical practices but also on continuity. When the same institutions and people remain involved over time, both those implementing projects and those taking part in them, long-term positive impact becomes possible.
This activity is part of the project “Integrated Forest Management along the Drin River Basin”, funded by the Austrian Development Cooperation, initiated by ICEP, and implemented by CNVP Foundation.
