CNVP Albania held the regional conference in Kukës on 9–10 June 2025 of the project “Sustainable Use of Natural Resources in Shara, Korab-Koritnik, and the Albanian Alps” funded by Prespa Ohrid Nature Trust (PONT), bringing together local organizations, community representatives, and government institutions to share experiences and build stronger partnerships for the sustainable use of natural resources in protected areas.

The conference aimed to showcase successful practices from sub-grant projects supported by CNVP Albania and PONT, promote knowledge exchange on biodiversity conservation and local economic development, generating ideas for future cooperation across the region. A strong point of discussion was also focused on encouraging stronger collaboration between local communities, NGOs, and government partners.

The event was opened with welcoming speeches from Anila Aliaj, Country Director of CNVP Albania, bringing the trajectory of this project the to table. CNVP Albania expressed its appreciation to PONT and its Executive Director. Miriam De Koning for her continuous support of conservation efforts in Albania and across the wider region. Special thanks were also extended to Mayor Albert Halili and the Municipality of Kukës , for their valuable contribution to the successful hosting of this event. The mayor had a  greeting speech and reinforced the support for future collaborations.

Discussions over the two days highlighted that protecting nature and supporting the local economy go hand in hand. Representatives of local organizations presented inspiring examples of how environmental protection can work alongside sustainable tourism, eco-friendly businesses, and traditional livelihoods. From safeguarding endangered species to promoting eco-tourism and the sustainable harvesting of natural products, participants shared their experiences of how local action, supported by regional cooperation, is delivering real results.

Particular attention was given to the importance of ecological corridors, natural pathways that help species move between protected areas. These corridors play a key role in maintaining healthy ecosystems, especially in the face of climate change, increasing environmental pressures and human intervention. Thanks to the work of CNVP Foundation, PONT, and local partners, the concept of ecological corridors is now becoming part of local and national planning efforts.

As the conference closed, participants agreed that the key to success lies in strengthening partnerships, continuing knowledge sharing, and placing local communities at the heart of all future conservation and development actions. The cooperation between CNVP Albania and PONT is a strong example of how sustainable development can create a greener, healthier, and more connected future for people and nature in Albania and the Western Balkans.
