Gesäuse National Park, Austria – The second day of the CNVP North Macedonia team's study visit to Gesäuse National Park, organized in cooperation with representatives from Shar and Mavrovo National Parks and sub-grantees supported through the CNVP/PONT project, was dedicated to learning from practical examples of nature-based tourism and sustainable use of natural resources.

The delegation explored the Gesäuse Partners Program, an innovative model that fosters collaboration between the national park and local businesses that align with principles of environmental sustainability, biodiversity conservation, and community development.

The day began with a visit to Veitlbauer, a local producer specializing in wine and vinegar made from organic apples. The team learned about the company’s sustainable production methods, challenges in the market, and innovative strategies for product promotion and distribution. The visit concluded with a tasting of their apple wine and a selection of natural fruit juices.

The next stop was Laussabauerhof, a rural eco-farm that offers lodging, locally produced food, and horseback riding. This multifunctional space also contributes to the park’s environmental education goals, particularly through its collaboration with local schools to teach children about biodiversity and the importance of protected areas.

The final visit of the day was to Kräuterbergbauer, a farm specializing in the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic herbs. Participants toured the herb gardens and gained insight into the various plant species grown for their healing properties. The visit ended with a sampling of the farm’s herbal products, including natural syrups and tinctures.

These site visits provided valuable insights into how local businesses can successfully integrate sustainability, nature conservation, and economic development. The CNVP delegation expressed appreciation for the warm hospitality and openness of the hosts in sharing their knowledge and experiences.

This study visit is part of the project "Sustainable Use of Natural Resources of Korab-Koritnik, Shar, and the Albanian Alps", implemented by CNVP and financially supported by the Prespa Ohrid Nature Trust (PONT). The overall goal of the project is to promote sustainable natural resource management and to strengthen regional cooperation through the exchange of knowledge and best practices in protected area management.
