As part of the field visit under the “Integrated Forest Management along the Transboundary Drin River Basin” project, representatives from CNVP Albania, the Austrian Development Agency (ADA), and the Austrian Embassy in Tirana held an official meeting with Mr. Rrok Dodaj, Mayor of Puka, and the staff of Puka Municipality.

The meeting served as an opportunity to present the progress of the Integrated Forest Management (IFM) project and to discuss its impact at the local level. Puka, one of the poorest municipalities in Albania, has often been overlooked in terms of international funding and development initiatives. Precisely because of this, CNVP Albania selected Puka as a priority area for implementing project interventions, aiming to bring tangible, long-term benefits to both its people and environment.

During the discussion, CNVP and its partners emphasized their commitment to supporting sustainable development in remote and underserved regions. The IFM project, funded by ADA and implemented by CNVP in partnership with ICEP, focuses on improving forest management, promoting energy-efficient solutions, and strengthening the link between environmental conservation and economic opportunity.

In turn, Mayor Rrok Dodaj expressed his deep appreciation for the support provided through the project. In a gesture of recognition, he awarded the Austrian Development Agency and the Austrian Embassy with the official title and "Gratitude of the Municipality of Puka", thanking Ambassador H.E. Monika Zachs for her continued contribution to local development.

“This project has brought attention to a community that has often been left behind. We are grateful for the meaningful support and partnership,” said Mayor Dodaj.

Anila Aliaj, County Director of CNVP Albania, also extended her thanks to the municipality for its ongoing cooperation and openness in facilitating the implementation of the project.

Though often overlooked, Puka has growing potential in sectors such as eco-tourism and agritourism. The region boasts a local touristic guide, well-maintained pedestrian paths around the lake, scenic mountain trails, and restaurants that celebrate traditional Albanian cuisine. Of special note is Puka Beer, a locally produced specialty that adds to the region’s identity and charm.

This meeting reaffirmed the power of partnership between local government, international donors, and civil society in addressing environmental and social challenges. With continued support and collaboration, Puka can become a model for sustainable rural development in Albania.
