On the International Day for Biological Diversity, our attention turns to one of nature’s most precious treasures: the rich variety of life that surrounds us. A living wealth that deserves to be known, valued, and above all protected.

In this spirit, the IFM project funded by the Austrian Development Agency (ADC) and the organization ICEP, is making a strong contribution to efforts aimed at preserving biodiversity in the Drin River Basin, with the implementation of CNVP Foundation. Under the second output of the project, concrete actions are being undertaken to identify and safeguard endangered habitats and rare species, while also linking this work to the economic empowerment of local communities.

In the Shala River area, part of the Drin River Basin, Professor Marash Rakaj from the University of Shkodra is leading an in-depth study of local ecosystems. Through field surveys, he has identified several important habitats and species that require conservation:

  1. Silver linden (Tilia tomentosa)
  2. Male fern (Dryopteris filix-mas)
  3. Wych elm (Ulmus glabra)
  4. Bear's garlic (Allium ursinum)
  5. Hart’s-tongue fern (Asplenium scolopendrium)
  6. Yew tree (Taxus baccata)

These species are part of a rare landscape, shaped by thousands of years of interaction between nature and humans. The study is ongoing, with the goal of developing an action plan for the restoration and long-term preservation of these valuable habitats.

Biodiversity conservation is not only an ecological responsibility, but also an opportunity for sustainable economic development, through the involvement of local communities in the responsible management of natural resources.

On this International Day for Biological Diversity, CNVP reaffirms its commitment to preserving nature’s richness through practical, science-based actions and strong collaboration with local communities. By protecting biodiversity, we are not only safeguarding the environment, but also supporting resilient livelihoods and sustainable development for present and future generations.

Together with our partners, through shared responsibility and concrete action, we can ensure that the natural heritage of the Drin River Basin continues to thrive.
