Deçan Municipality Leads the Way with Biomass Heating Partnership

The Municipality of Deçan in Kosovo, the Public Waste Management Company "Higjiena," and CNVP Kosovo have officially signed a partnership agreement to install a new biomass heating system based on sustainable wood resources.
The initiative is supported by the Embassy of Sweden in Pristina (Sida) through the SUNREED project (Sustainable Use of Natural Resources for Environment and Economic Development), implemented by CNVP Kosovo.
This partnership brings several important benefits:
- A modern biomass heating system that significantly reduces heating costs and air pollution.
- Strengthening the local economy by supporting small businesses and creating new jobs within the biomass supply chain.
- Promoting sustainable forest management practices by using wood residues that would otherwise go to waste.
The new heating system will use woodchips produced from the treatment of nearby forests, as well as the collection and chipping of wood waste from shelterbelts and other lands through the grinding machine will be provided to Higjiena, allowing them to collect and process wood residues into quality woodchips for heating.
This practical investment not only supports the new heating system but also offers a model for replication in other municipalities across Kosovo, demonstrating how natural resources can be used sustainably for cleaner, more affordable energy solutions.
This initiative stands as a strong example of how partnerships between municipalities, public companies and organizations like CNVP Kosovo can drive forward sustainable development and energy transition at the local level.
